Oct 30-Nov 3

9:00am -12:30pm

(5 Consecutive mornings)

All Levels Welcome

Course Outline:

The most efficient way to develop your observation and intuition simultaneously is to practice Alla Prima painting. Gaining the ability to work quickly, and with precision, is key in your development as a painter. The time restraint forces you to forego detail, see the big picture, and focus on gesture and large masses, the elements which ultimately hold the power and personality within a portrait. In this class, we will work with a systematic and disciplined technique that is uniquely designed to achieve this aim.

I will provide frequent demos, breaking down the process of painting into clear and consecutive steps, as well as critique and instruction each session. Since simplicity is one of our goals, we will be using a limited palette -- a limited palette of only 5 colors; Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Quinacridone Red, Cobalt Teal and Blue-Black (W&N). This palette is very dynamic and will refine our understanding of color relationships. We will focus on 4 main aspects of a portrait: Proportion, Value, Color, and Edge, which will help us to accurately capture a likeness within a limited time frame. Practicing this way over the course of the month will help to sharpen your observation, and take your skill to a new level.

About Dominique Medici Studio:

This workshop will be held in my private north light studio at The Inscape Arts building in Seattle's International District. In addition to the romantic image of the old masters working in a north light studio there are practical advantages as well. A north facing window yields the most constant light throughout the day. The naturally diffused light creates controlled values, subtle hues and nuanced temperature shifts. The workshops will be limited to 6 spots. The benefit of a small group is that each student will get much more individual attention and guidance. I will draw with the group for some portion of the weekend. As the old goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words".  I am looking forward to sharing the studio with you and working together.

Course Outline:

Drawing is a fundamental skill that underpins all classical art. Drawing the Portrait on toned paper using both black and white charcoal is a great way to develop your understanding of proportions, value structure and rendering form. I will provide demos, breaking down the process of drawing into clear and consecutive steps, as well as critique and instruction each session. This class is open to amateurs and professionals alike.

Workshop Schedule:

Gage Academy of Art, Seattle WA

Oct 21- 22 2017

9:30am - 4:30pm

Saturday- Sunday

Tuition: $250

All Levels Welcome

Course Outline:

The Self Portrait has been a tradition for artists through the millennia, serving as both a historical document and window into the interior of the artists being. There is a quality and intensity in the way we observe when drawing and painting. Turning this level of awareness back on ourselves is a revealing and inspiring process.

During this 2 day Oil Painting Workshop I will demonstrate and give individual instruction each day. In this workshop we will be considering the following aspects of a self portrait. palette and panel preparation setting up the work space, then move on to composition, drawing and proportions, developing basic light and shade, working wet on wet and finally learning how to achieve a good likeness. My Goal is that each student walks away with a clear understanding of how to approach a self portrait.

Course Outline:

As aspiring artists we are always searching for ways to capture and express a quality of light in our work. Leonardo Da Vinci said it best, "Of the original phenomena, light is the most enthralling." When you use white chalk on black paper you are drawing the light and see the forms emerge from the dark background. This teaches you how to control value and yields a beautiful and mysterious quality.

"Shadows which you see with difficulty, and whose boundaries you cannot define... these you should not represent as finished or sharply defined, for the result would be that your work would seem wooden". -Leonardo da Vinci

Lose the "wooden" quality in your work by learning how to vary edges. Lost and found edges breathe life in to work by creating depth and volume. This is a valuable component in taking your work to the next step. This is going to be a fun class. Space is limited.

Schedule:

Sept 5- Intro, Demo, Q&A and 1x 1 hr portrait
