Figure and Portrait Painting with a Limited Palette

Manitoba, Canada

September 27-29 2019

10:00am -5:00pm

(Friday-Sunday)

All Levels Welcome

Course Outline:

The most efficient way to develop your observation and intuition simultaneously is to practice Alla Prima painting. Gaining the ability to work quickly, and with precision, is key in your development as a painter. The time restraint forces you to forego detail, see the big picture, and focus on gesture and large masses, the elements which ultimately hold the power and personality within a portrait. In this class, we will work with a systematic and disciplined technique that is uniquely designed to achieve this aim.

I will provide frequent demos, breaking down the process of painting into clear and consecutive steps, as well as critique and instruction each session. Since simplicity is one of our goals, we will be using a limited palette of 6 colors; Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light and Blue-Black (W&N). By using this dynamic palette we refine our understanding of color relationships. To accurately capture a likeness within a limited time frame we will focus on the 4 main aspects of a portrait: Proportion, Value, Color, and Edge.  Practicing this way will sharpen your observation, and take your skill to a new level.

Egg Tempera painting is an exceptionally beautiful and subtle painting medium that is said to date back to ancient Egypt. It was commonly practiced in the 14th and 15th C. in Italy during the Italian Renaissance, notably, by virtuoso painters like Giotto, Fra Angelico, Botticelli and in recent times most notably by Andrew Wyeth.

This week long workshop is a hands on introduction  to the methods and materials of the 14th and 15th C. Italian Egg Tempera painter. We will walk in the shoes of the studio apprentice and learn how to do the following.

  • Learn how to make “genuine gesso panels" from scratch using glue and chalk

  • Prepare homemade toned drawing paper for silverpoint drawing

  • Grind and emulsify your own egg tempera paint

  • Practice various egg tempera painting techniques

  • Make handmade transfer paper

  • Learn how to grid and scale thumbnail designs to a panel

  • Use ink on to develop an underpainting on a true gesso panel

  • Paint your first egg tempera painting

polish field.jpg

What is Egg Tempera?

Egg Tempera is made by taking an egg yolk and mixing it with pigment. This emulsion is then painted on an absorbent ground of Gesso. Traditional Gesso was made by heating a solution of glue and water and mixing it with chalk/ gypsum. This solution was then applied to a wooden support in successive layers. After a day or so the panel is sanded and ready to be used for painting.

Egg Tempera painting is a patient and meditative process. One achieves a result by carefully building up a form with successive layers of very thin paint. It is a natural medium for those that love drawing and the technical process of painting. A finished Tempera painting has a delicate translucency and radiance that is unparalleled by other painting mediums.

This is the First of a Four week course on Egg Tempera Painting and Practice.

Course Outline:

When we copy a master painting we step into the mind of the artist. We gain insight and understanding by following in their footsteps. When working with a disciplined method we learn about technique and process, about structure, form, value, color and edge. Perhaps more importantly, we learn patience and focus. It is a combination of all these things that leads us not just to a deeper appreciation of art and skill but of our own potentialities. There will be a variety of Old Master’s Prints to choose from. We will develop paintings from them over the course of 5 days by starting with a drawing, then transferring to a panel/canvas, establishing an underpainting and finally go into full color. It is bound to be both aesthetically and intellectually fulfilling.

Course Description:

It is often said that value does all the work but color gets all the credit.

Value studies can stand on their own as finished works or be used to develop a color painting. In both cases using a monochromatic palette facilitates a deeper appreciation of value structure and form. An understanding of value is an essential preparation for working in color.

Working from still life, photos and a live model, we will be using a monochromatic palette during this 5 day Intensive. Our lessons will focus on composition, structure, value, brush handling, rendering form and edge work.

Daily class demos and discussion will break down the process of painting into clear and consecutive steps. Individual instruction will be given each session. This week is bound to take your skills to a new level.

Tuition: $125

Beginner/ All Levels Welcome

Course Outline:

Silverpoint is a beautiful and subtle drawing media that employs the use of sterling silver stylus to draw on hand prepared paper. This technique is exemplified in the drawings of Leonardo Da Vinci and Raphael. Working with this unique process gives us a taste of the experience of Renaissance masters and insight into the way materials have evolved into what we use today.

  • We will make our own Silverpoint Stylus with a wooden dowel and sterling silver (which you can keep)

  • We will make hand prepared toned paper as described by Cennino Cennini in, Il libro dell'arte.

  • We will try various exercises working with silverpoint and white chalk/charcoal

  • Finally, we will make a small drawing.

Dominique will demonstrate each process and work with each individual throughout the day. This workshop is a unique opportunity and experience and we hope you can join in.

About Dominique Medici Studio:

This workshop will be held in my private studio at The Inscape Arts building in Seattle's International District. The workshop is limited to 6 students. The benefit of a small group is that each student will get much more individual attention and guidance.  I am looking forward to sharing the studio with you and working together.

Alla Prima Painting:

The most efficient way to develop your observation and intuition simultaneously is to practice Alla Prima painting. The ability to work quickly, and with precision, is key in your development as a painter. The time restraint forces you to forego detail, see the big picture, and focus on gesture and large masses, these elements hold the power and personality within a portrait. In this class, we will work with a systematic and disciplined technique that is uniquely designed to achieve this aim.

I will start with a demo and break down the process of painting into clear and consecutive steps. I will critique and instruct each session. Since simplicity is one of our goals, we will be using a limited palette -- a Chromatic palette of only 6 colors; Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, Quinacridone Red, Cobalt Teal and Blue-Black (W&N). This palette is very dynamic and will refine our understanding of color relationships. We will focus on the 4 main aspects of a portrait: Proportion, Value, Color, and Edge. This will help us to accurately capture a likeness within a limited time frame. Practicing this way over the course of the weekend will help to sharpen your observation, and take your skill to a new level.

What colors does one use to mix skin tones, and how can one mix realistic flesh tones consistently? This workshop is an exploration of that question. We will work from both models and photographs and spend the weekend talking about color theory,  discussing the relationships between hue, value and temperature and practice mixing flesh tones. We will work with a systematic technique that is designed to help us understand how to mix any color in only a few steps.

I will start with a demo and break down the process of painting into clear and consecutive steps. I will critique and instruct each session. We will be using a limited palette -- a Chromatic palette of only 7 colors; Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, Quinacridone Red, Cobalt Teal, Ultramarine Blue and Ivory Black. This palette is very dynamic and will refine our understanding of color relationships. Practicing this way over the course of the weekend will help to sharpen your observation, and take your skill to a new level.

Introduction to Egg Tempera, Materials and Techniques, Part 1

Dominique Medici Studio, Seattle WA

June 18-22 2018

9:00am -4:00pm

(Monday-Friday)

Tuition: $650

(Semi Private Workshop, Limited to 8)

About Dominique Medici Studio:

This workshop will be held in my private north light studio at The Inscape Arts building in Seattle's International District. In addition to the romantic image of the old masters working in a north light studio there are practical advantages as well. A north facing window yields the most constant light throughout the day. The naturally diffused light creates controlled values, subtle hues and nuanced temperature shifts. The workshops will be limited to 6 spots. The benefit of a small group is that each student will get much more individual attention and guidance. I will draw with the group for some portion of the weekend. As the old goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words".  I am looking forward to sharing the studio with you and working together.

Alla Prima a technique in which the proportion, value, color, edge and brush strokes happen simultaneously. The painting is worked “wet into wet” and typically finished in one session. Great Masters of the past like Velasquez, Sargent and Sorolla worked this way. It is a thrilling practice with endless scope for expression.

Course Outline:

As aspiring artists we are always searching for ways to capture and express a quality of light in our work. Leonardo Da Vinci said it best, "Of the original phenomena, light is the most enthralling." When you use white chalk on black paper you are drawing the light and see the forms emerge from the dark background. This teaches you how to control value and yields a beautiful and mysterious quality.

"Shadows which you see with difficulty, and whose boundaries you cannot define... these you should not represent as finished or sharply defined, for the result would be that your work would seem wooden". -Leonardo da Vinci

Lose the "wooden" quality in your work by learning how to vary edges. Lost and found edges breathe life in to work by creating depth and volume. This is a valuable component in taking your work to the next step. This is going to be a fun class. Space is limited.

Schedule:

Sept 5- Intro, Demo, Q&A and 1x 1 hr portrait

Sept 12- we will draw 1x 3 hr figure
