August 5-6

Saturday and Sunday, 2 Day Workshop

All Levels Welcome

Course Outline:

Gaining the ability to work quickly, and with precision, is key in your development as a painter. The most efficient way to develop your observation and intuition is to practice with short poses. The time restraint forces you to forego detail, see the big picture, and focus on gesture and large masses. This is the secret behind all great works. In this class, we will work witha systematic and disciplined technique that is uniquely designed to achieve this aim.

I will provide frequent demos, breaking down the process of painting into clear and consecutive steps, as well as critique and instruction each session. Since simplicity is one of our goals, we will be using a limited palette -- a limited palette of only 6 colors; Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Quinacridone Red, Cadmium Red Light, Cobalt Teal and Blue-Black (W&N). This palette is dynamic and will help us understand color relationships. We will focus on 4 main aspects of a portrait: Proportion, Value, Color, and Edge, which will help us to accurately capture a likeness within a limited time frame. Practicing this way over the course of the month will help to sharpen your observation, and take your skill to a new level.

Course Outline:

For the beginner and master alike, painting the portrait and figure has inspired and propelled countless artists in their quest to master skills and express inner convictions. The great paintings throughout history always have a beautiful balance of proportion, value, color and edge. These aspects are what give power and presence in our work. During this workshop we will use a semi-limited palette to paint a combination of portraits and full length figures using the direct painting method (Alla-Prima). This practice is deeply rewarding, engaging and bound to take our appreciation and skill to the next level.

Alla Prima a technique in which the proportion, value, color, edge and brush strokes happen simultaneously. The painting is worked “wet into wet” and typically finished in one session. Great Masters of the past like Velasquez, Sargent and Sorolla worked this way. It is a thrilling practice with endless scope for expression.

Course Outline:

The Self Portrait has been a tradition for artists through the millennia, serving as both a historical document and window into the interior of the artists being. There is a quality and intensity in the way we observe when drawing and painting. Turning this level of awareness back on ourselves is a revealing and inspiring process.

During this 2 day Oil Painting Workshop I will demonstrate and give individual instruction each day. In this workshop we will be considering the following aspects of a self portrait. palette and panel preparation setting up the work space, then move on to composition, drawing and proportions, developing basic light and shade, working wet on wet and finally learning how to achieve a good likeness. My Goal is that each student walks away with a clear understanding of how to approach a self portrait.
