Gaining the ability to work quickly, and with precision is key to the development of a painter. The most efficient way to develop observation and intuition simultaneously is to practice painting with short poses. Each class will consist of three 30-minute portraits, and one 60-minute portrait. Since simplicity is one of the goals, student’s will be using the Zorn palette – a limited palette of only 4 colors; Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Vermillion (or Cad Red Light) and Ivory Black.

Using a time restraint forces the student to forego detail, see the big picture, and focus on gesture and large masses, the elements which ultimately hold the power and personality within a portrait. In this class, students will work through a systematic and disciplined technique that is uniquely designed to achieve this technique. Class will also incorporate frequent demos, process of painting into clear and consecutive steps, as well as critique and instruction each night.
