Weekend Workshop Description

An efficient way to develop our observation and intuition is by practicing Alla Prima painting. In this 2-day Portrait Painting WorkshopWe will investigate some of the skills and techniques that make our portraits luminous and beautiful. Dominique demos and shows you a process of painting with clear and systematic steps. We will use a primary palette of 7 colors that is designed to help us master color theory and demystify color mixing. We will use these skills to create 2 or 3 paintings by the end of the weekend. 

Skill level is not that important although basic drawing skills are a plus. Any student that is interested in receiving instruction and willing to put in the practice is welcome.

Portrait and Figure Painting with a Limited Palette

Workshop Description

The ability to work quickly, and with precision, is key in our development as painters. In this workshop we will develop our intuition and spontaneity with short poses in the morning sessions and our accuracy and likeness with a long poses in the afternoon. Dominique will provide frequent demos, break down the process of painting into clear and consecutive steps, as well as critique and instruction each session.

Since simplicity is one of our goals, we will be using a limited palette of 7 colors. This palette helps us refine our understanding of color theory and color relationships. We will focus on 4 main aspects of a portrait: Proportion, Value, Color, and Edge, Practicing this way over the course of the week will help sharpen our observation, and take our skills to a new level.

Theme for the month | The Portrait as a Story.

You can compose your own painting or work from a selection of themes and images that Dominique will provide. Your composition could be as simple as a Portrait of a loved one with flowers, or sitting in an interior space with their favorite book or a figure in a landscape. A painting is more than just a portrait, it is a story, the options are endless.

This month we will paint 2 portraits. First we will study and copy a Zorn portrait and use his famed palette of only 4 colors. Then we will paint a contemporary portrait in the style of Zorn and put what we learned about his palette and technique in to practice.

In This class we will practice the techniques of the Gilded Age's most celebrated portrait painter John Singer Sargent. You can choose 1 of 5 reference photos to work from, or any Sargent portrait painting that you find on your own would be fine too. Our goal will be to work directly and use his palette. As always We aim to finish the portrait in 4 sessions.

Theme for the month | Paint your favorite Character

We all have been inspired by characters in film, tv or books. In this class we will paint our favorite character. Search online for someone you like or admire. The only important thing is that the image has sufficient resolution to work from. Feel free to send me some images to help you choose. The idea is to take our inspiration and appreciation to a deeper level and have some fun at the same time. I will likely paint Dumbledore from the Harry Potter series.

Theme for the month | Personal Project

Your personal project is an opportunity to showcase your growth and progress from the past 2 years of working online. It can be based on your favorite subject, such as painting a family member, a figure in a landscape, or a still life. Whatever you choose, it should bring together all of the techniques and skills that we have been working on. This project will be a 7-session challenge, allowing you enough time to create a piece that is involved and accomplished. For those who prefer to tackle a master copy challenge, I will provide a selection of paintings that are a bit more complex and will push your abilities. To help you stay on track.

In either case, I will provide a rough outline of the process and a checklist to help keep us on track, in addition to our usual weekly critiques. This personal project is an excellent opportunity to showcase your artistic voice and demonstrate your mastery of the techniques we have learned.

Theme for the month | Painting Light Part 2.

In Feb we did a master copy of a Vermeer. This month we compose our own interior scene based on one of Vermeer’s paintings. You will need to provide your own reference for this month. It can be as simple as replicating one of Vermeer’s interiors or you can play with the theme and make it your own. In either case, your composition should include a person, window and interior space.

You do not need to have been in the Feb class to take this class. All are welcome. Theme for the month | Painting Light. We copy a painting by the master of light, Vermeer. You will have a choice of one of 3 images to copy. We will dive deep into the subtleties of capturing light and learn how to use edges and texture to create a feeling of atmosphere. This is a 4 week pose. In March we will be composing our own interior based on what we learned this month.

Dominique demonstrates the painting process and breaks it down into clear steps. We use a limited palette to help us understand color theory and relationships. Each week students receive critiques. Enjoy lifetime access to class and critique videos

• Long Pose Class | In this class we focus on Portrait, Figure, Interiors, Still Life and Landscape. The exercises range from 4-8 weeks.
