Commission a Portrait

With every portrait I strive to create a unique and timeless work of art and to make the process simple and enjoyable for all involved. I prefer to work from live sittings and/or my own digital photographs. However, if you want to provide a photo or if it is a post humous portrait you can submit your image for review. I assess the quality of your images and let you know if there is enough information to create a successful portrait. After our initial consultation and discussion of size and pricing we start the process.

The Process

  1. In our first conversation we will discuss the nature of your portrait , how best to convey the subject the size, setting, composition. From this discussion a contract with a quote will be drawn up and sent to you. Once signed we can book our first session.

  2. We then arrange for a studio sitting and photo shoot. During the scheduled sitting of 2 to 3 hours, I will sketch the sitter and take reference photos. The photos will be reviewed with the client for feedback. When working from photographs it is beneficial to have a second session to produce a head and shoulders color study (does not apply for drawing commissions). This can be done at the same time as the photoshoot or scheduled for another day. Work is done on the portrait and depending on the nature of the portrait subsequent sittings can be scheduled.

  3. Once the portrait is finished I will either invite you to the studio for a viewing or send a photograph of the painting to you for approval

Completion

Charcoal drawings will be sprayed with fixative before shipping.

Paintings will need to be varnished 1 year after completion. Clients that bring the painting to the studio will have this service performed free of charge.

For US residents shipping is free of charge. Local clients may see the finished portrait in person.
