Theme: Painting Alla Prima Painting with a Limited Palette
Working alla prima—wet into wet, in a single sitting—is one of the quickest ways to sharpen both your eye and your instinct. The clock does the teaching: with no time to fuss over detail, you’re pushed to see the big picture and commit to gesture, large masses, and the essential shapes that capture the life and personality of a portrait.
Over four weeks, you’ll complete one painting each session. Dominique demonstrates a systematic, repeatable approach to direct painting, breaking the process into clear, consecutive steps, followed by individual critique. Working from a limited palette, we focus on the four fundamentals—proportion, value, color, and edge—learning to make confident decisions and capture a convincing likeness within a limited window. We’ll work from a combination of photographs and master paintings.
Practiced consistently, this way of working builds confidence, strengthens your instincts, and brings greater clarity and economy to your painting. All levels are welcome; some drawing experience is helpful.
