Intro to Egg Tempera: Materials & Techniques

August 6-9, 2026

Tuition: $675 + $35 Materials Fee

Skill Level: All Levels

Discover the luminous beauty of egg tempera—one of the oldest and most refined painting mediums, cherished by Renaissance masters like Botticelli, Fra Angelico, and Piero della Francesca. In this immersive 3–4 day workshop, students learn the complete traditional process from the ground up.

We’ll begin by preparing true gesso panels and making toned silverpoint paper. From there, you’ll grind and emulsify pigments with fresh egg yolk, mix your own tempera paint, and explore the subtle layering, glazing, and fine brushwork that give this medium its unmistakable radiance. Students will also learn drawing-transfer methods, underpainting approaches, and how to create the distinctive luminosity, precision, and quiet poetry that egg tempera is known for.

This workshop welcomes both absolute beginners and more experienced painters. Beginners will start with blending exercises, simple forms, and guided practice studies, with all references provided. Advanced students may choose to create a master copy of a Renaissance painting, work from their own curated reference options in class, or use their own personal reference (with prior approval). Students submitting their own photos should send them ahead of time; key things I’ll be looking for are strong light and shade, clear form, and whether the image is suitable for egg tempera’s precision-based approach.

Perfect for anyone who loves drawing, craftsmanship, and the meditative rhythm of slow, deliberate work.

June 16, 23, 30 2026 (3 sessions)

9:30am- 12:30, and/or 1:00- 4:00pm (Pacific Time)

Instructor: Dominique Medici

Theme: Color & Light

This session centers on transparent color through the lens of spring — florals, shifting light, and delicate color relationships. Using still life as a framework, we’ll explore how transparency, edges, texture, and atmosphere can bring greater subtlety and luminosity to a painting.

The structure of the class is intentionally flexible. Students may choose to complete one painting per week, work through several smaller studies, or develop a single sustained piece over multiple sessions. The emphasis is on observation, consistent practice, and strengthening core fundamentals through direct painting from life.

Students are encouraged to bring 1–5 objects that genuinely interest them — flowers, fruits, reflective or luminous objects, fabrics, ceramics, glass, or anything they’ve been wanting to paint. Thoughtful object selection and arrangement will be part of the creative process.

This class is designed for both beginners and experienced painters looking to deepen their understanding of color, value, composition, and paint handling in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Charcoal and Pastel Portraits on Toned Paper

In this weekend class, students will create charcoal and pastel portraits on toned paper, learning a clear, step-by-step approach to drawing the head with structure, depth, and believable light. Working on toned paper allows students to think in terms of middle value, adding both light and shadow to build form quickly and effectively.

We will focus on the four essential elements of strong drawing: proportion, value, edges, and simple color relationships (using pastel for light accents and temperature shifts). Students will work from both photo reference and a live model to understand how to apply the same process in different situations.

Each session includes live demonstrations by Dominique and individual critiques for every student. This class emphasizes observation, simplicity, and confident mark-making, helping students strengthen their ability to see accurately and build form with clarity.

Theme: Portrait and Figure Painting with a Transparent Limited Palette

This month we're working with portrait and figure using a transparent limited palette — transparent yellow oxide, transparent red oxide, ultramarine blue, and lead white (or a flake white alternative).

Painting transparently means building in layers, exploring depth, luminosity, and subtle color shifts and invites closer attention to texture, brushwork, and the physical presence of paint.

We'll complete two paintings over the month: a portrait and a half figure.

The class follows a clear, systematic 4-step process. Each week includes a live demonstration with narration, and students receive individual critiques. The focus is on accurate color mixing, value, and likeness — developing your ability to paint what you see.

Open to all levels; basic drawing skills recommended.

Returning students: you'll likely have most materials already, but check the list — Liquin is a helpful addition for this month's approach.

Theme: Indirect Painting & Nocturne Light
This month we’ll complete two paintings, each exploring a different approach to light and color.

In the first two weeks, we’ll work through an indirect painting process, beginning with a grisaille underpainting. From there, we’ll move into glazing and overpainting, learning how to build color gradually and work into wet glazes to create depth, subtlety, and atmosphere.

In the second half of the month, we’ll shift into a new painting focused on the nocturne figure. Here, we’ll explore how skin tones and values transform under evening light—learning to see color more relatively, simplify value relationships, and capture the quiet, unified mood of low-light conditions.

Throughout the month, the focus will be on developing sensitivity to value, color, and edge while working through two distinct but complementary painting approaches.

Open to all levels (basic drawing skills recommended). Anyone eager to learn and put in the practice is welcome. With a focus on accurate color mixing and creating likeness, you’ll develop your ability to paint what you see within a limited time frame, taking your skills to the next level.

Procreate for Painters | Part 2

May 7, 14, 21, 28 (4 Wednesdays),

Instructor: Agustina Forest

Procreate for Painters – Part 2: Editing Reference & Composition

In this follow-up Procreate class, we’ll take your digital art skills to the next level with a focus on  editing reference, composition, and building a strong reference for painting. Designed especially for traditional artists—particularly oil painters—this workshop will help you develop a digital workflow that supports your creative process.

Agustina will guide you through practical techniques for using Procreate as a powerful planning tool. You’ll learn how to strengthen your compositions, experiment with light and color, and combine multiple references into one cohesive image—before ever picking up a brush.

In this workshop you will learn how to:

  • Edit and manipulate photo references

  • Strengthen compositions and value structures

  • Experiment with color and lighting digitally before painting

  • Combine multiple references into a cohesive painting plan

  • Build digital skills that support traditional oil painting

  • Troubleshoot a portrait using Procreate

Requirements:

This class is intended for students who already have a basic working knowledge of Procreate. You should feel comfortable with things like:

  • Importing and resizing an image

  • Using basic adjustment tools (like brightness/contrast or hue/saturation)

  • Making and editing selections

If you’re not quite there yet, we recommend purchasing and watching Part 1 of this series first: Procreate for Painters - Part 1

Class Format:

This class includes pre-recorded sessions where you’ll learn step-by-step techniques, and a live session where we’ll review your own references. You’ll be able to ask questions, get feedback, and watch live demonstrations on how Agustina would approach editing your images.

Agustina won’t be going too fast, but she also won’t be reviewing every basic tool—so you can expect a steady, thoughtful pace that assumes you’re already a little familiar with the app.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to use Procreate as a smart and supportive tool to help you create stronger, more intentional references for your paintings.

Tuition: $200 (Beginner)

September 23-27 (5 Days)

Drawing Portraits with believable color isn’t hard if we learn how to break the process up into manageable steps. We will focus on the 4 main aspects of drawing portraits: Proportions, Values, Colors, and Edge types. Dominique will demo as well as critique students each session. Practicing this way will help sharpen our observation, and take our skills to a new level.

Skill level is not that important although basic drawing skills are a plus. Any student that is interested in receiving instruction and willing to put in the practice is welcome.
